As a good rule of thumb, if someone sets out with the explicit intention of becoming a martyr, what they’re doing is fundamentally useless and should be ignored to discourage imitators. If someone is martyred in the process of doing something useful (see: MLK), it’s fine to venerate them, but it should be done with the asterisk that the world would be better if they had kept doing the useful thing they were doing instead of dying.
